Surface-wave damping in a brimful circular cylinder

چکیده

The natural frequencies and damping rates of surface waves in a circular cylinder with pinned-end boundary conditions are calculated in terms of the gravitational Reynolds and Bond numbers, C and B, and the slenderness of the cylinder A, in the limit C —>• 0. We consider higher-order approximations that include the effect of viscous dissipation in the Stokes boundary layers and the bulk. A comparison with clean-surface experiments by Henderson & Miles (1994) shows a satifactory agreement except for the first axisymmetric mode, which exhibits a 26% discrepancy. The much larger dramatic discrepancy of former theoretical predictions is hereby improved and explained.

Capillary damping of inviscid surface waves in a circular cylinder

We consider the effect of a wetting condition at the moving contact line on the frequency and damping of surface waves on an inviscid liquid in a circular cylinder. The velocity potential φ and the free surface elevation η are sought as complex eigenfunction expansions. The φ eigenvalues are the classical ones whereas the η eigenvalues are unknown and have to be computed so as to satisfy the we...

Large Scale Experiments Data Analysis for Estimation of Hydrodynamic Force Coefficients

This paper describes the various frequency domain methods which may be used to analyze experiments data on the force experienced by a circular cylinder in wave and current to estimate drag and inertia coefficients for use in Morison’s equation. An additional approach, system identification techniques (SIT) is also introduced. A set of data obtained from experiments on heavily roughened circular...

Estimation of Hydrodynamic Force on Rough Circular Cylinders in Random Waves and Currents (RESEARCH NOTE)

Most of the Codes of Practice (API, BSI, DnV, NPD) uses Morison's equation to estimate hydrodynamic loads on fixed and moving offshore structures. The significant difference in the prediction of the loads mainly arises from the assumption of the values of hydrodynamic coefficients. In this paper by analysing a full scale set of data in large KC's numbers collected from Delta Wave Flume in the N...

Wave-field Flow Structures Developing around Large-diameter Vertical Circular Cylinder

In this work the issue of wave-induced flow structures that develop around a largediameter surface-piercing vertical circular cylinder is addressed. A strictly-linear wave case is considered and simulated numerically, solving the Euler equations in primitive variables, and the results are compared with those obtained from the corresponding close-form velocity-potential solution. Then, the swirl...
